NEW DVD SERVICE EXPANDS HOME SCHOOL OPTIONS

BJU LOOKS TO DLN FOR DVD DISTRIBUTION

New DVD service expands home school options

JONESBORO, AR
– A new service providing the entire spectrum of K-12 classes on DVD for home educators has just been announced by Digital Learning Network (DLN) of Jonesboro. DLN will be the exclusive source for DVD products using programming from the BJ HomeSat satellite network.

DLN president Bob Shumpert sees the move as a giant step forward. “We are already the authorized representative for BJ HomeSat classes on VHS tape. Nothing comes close to BJU’s curriculum in terms of a creative delivery of first-rate educational materials. While VHS tapes are a great service, VHS technology has inherent limitations. Those limitations are addressed by the DVD technology.”

"Convenience is a key advantage of the DVDs," Shumpert said.

“The disks take almost no space. You can put the classes through your TV set, use a portable DVD player, or play the disks on most PCs or laptops. There’s no rewinding and you have almost instant access to a given lesson or even elements within a lesson.”

He noted that classes not only extend throughout elementary and high school years, but also include what most families regard as the “tough” subjects: science, math, and foreign language.

The DLN/VideoClassRoom-DVD (DLN/VCR-DVD) materials are offered as part of a membership package that includes year-round (12-month) content and a monthly payment plan with no additional charge for the second child in a grade. For added convenience, the DVD package includes the printed BJU Press curricula on which the class segments are based.

“We take a lot of satisfaction in giving families good choices,” Shumpert said. “They now can choose between a round-the-clock satellite service, VHS tapes, or DVDs. Within the DVD option they can adjust classes and grades to match their child’s abilities. They can make optional book purchases by subject or get a complete, discounted package of textbooks and DVDs for all grades.”

DLN has been the exclusive agent for BJ HomeSat/VHS since 2001. “BJU is known for its high-quality instructional materials and its strategy of teaching for understanding. Parents tell us what a difference this material makes – both in terms of easing the load on mom and dad, and also in the child’s achievement,” said Shumpert.

DLN/VideoClassRoom’s DVD materials are targeted at the 2.5 million home school families living in the U.S. and other English speaking countries around the world. Studies indicate that home schoolers average 3.3 children per household. While they express satisfaction with their overall experience, parents consistently cite time pressures as a challenge. The BJ HomeSat product on DVD is designed to ease that pressure.

BJU LOOKS TO DLN FOR DVD DISTRIBUTION

GREENVILLE, SC – Citing the importance of offering home educators both quality and choice, Mr. Jeff Hargraves, director of the Center for Educational Technology here, announced the availability of an important new service.

“We have begun offering BJ HomeSat classes on DVD,” Hargraves said. “Our courses, K-12, are widely recognized as the leading video curriculum for home educators. Families now have a great new option for delivery of those programs.”

Hargraves continued, “Convenience has been a keystone of BJ HomeSat from the outset. My own family home-schooled. We made sure we knew what would work in the home before we taped the first class. Combine that approach with DVD technology … and you have a very powerful, very convenient medium.”

An early innovation of BJ HomeSat was the inclusion of a brief segment, referred to as Mom’s Minutes, to give the teaching parent a quick snapshot of the day’s lesson and her role in it. With the new BJ HomeSat DVD product, watching Mom’s Minutes is as simple as sliding the disk into a unit, clicking on a menu item and—almost instantaneously—there it is playing.

“Flexibility is big with us,” Hargraves noted. “Home school families now have three ways to get our programs. First is our satellite network. Four channels, virtually non-stop. Each morning across America tens of thousands of students go to school with BJ HomeSat. The satellite network is an unparalleled value. Then we have our tried and true VHS service and now, added to that, is DVD. No one else comes close.”

“What’s more,” he continued “the convenience and the good choices don’t stop there. We make the DVD available as a full-grade package, complete with all of the required BJU Press texts. So all of that is taken care of for you. But we realize every child is different. So within that grade-level package individual courses can be swapped for the one best suited to your child’s ability. Math 5 with Reading 6? No problem!”

For the DVD product, Bob Jones University, the parent of the BJ HomeSat Network, has arranged for the Digital Learning Network (DLN) in Jonesboro, AR to manage the product line and handle order fulfillment. DLN specializes in electronic forms of distance learning and has been a pioneer with DVD technology.

Bob Shumpert, president of DLN, said, “We’ve been serving home educators for ten years and also manage BJU’s VHS product. We’re proud of our association with BJ HomeSat and delighted for the opportunity to work with so many fine families, not only in the US, but throughout the world.”

Shumpert echoed Jeff Hargrave's comments about the satellite network, but noted that, for reasons of geography or lifestyle, the network is not a fit for every family. “VHS has been a good option in those cases, but DVD is even better. Compact, durable, and convenient. Watch it on your TV set, in a portable DVD player, on most PCs and on many laptops. And no rewinding!”

The DLN/VideoClassRoom DVD (DLN/VCR-DVD) materials are offered as part of a membership package that includes year-round (12-month) content and a monthly payment plan with no additional charge for the second child in a grade. For added convenience, the DVD package includes the printed BJU Press curricula on which the class segments are based.
